WHAT IS BuggyBootcamp ALL ABOUT?

BuggyBootcamp is all about us mums!

Here’s a little history Lesson for you! BuggyBootcamp was started many years ago in 2009 by founder Nicola Ostler. I joined nearly 10 years ago and have been running classes in Bedford for all of this time. I’m very experienced and totally passionate about what I do, so I assure you that you’re in very safe hands. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to join you all in Shoreham and can’t wait to get started!

My classes provide a safe, friendly, relaxed and fun way to exercise and begin your postnatal recovery journey. You bring your child or children to class with you and although they’re not used for the exercises they are very much a part of the group. You can of course come along to the beginner BuggyBootcamp class without your children as long as you don’t mind the noise and that you realise it’s a very much gentler form of bootcamp than the traditional army style bootcamps.

My classes are suitable for postnatal mums from 6 weeks after having a normal birth. You can come along at whatever stage of recovery, if baby is 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years or 16 years. (My eldest is 20 nearly 21!). Within each class there are always different variations of exercise going on as everyone is at such different stages. Some mums want high impact, others need low impact. Some mums need to have exercises adapted because of diastasis and others are more than capable to plank. If you want safe effective pelvic floor safe exercise that strengthens your body and to chat through the duration of your session then BuggyBootcamp is for you. If of course you do want to work harder and are postnatally recovered then let me know and I’ll make sure you sweat in between your chatting!

During each class we focus on posture, pelvic floor health and regaining your core strength and general muscle tone that has been affected by pregnancy and childbirth. You will work at your own level with appropriate exercises and won’t be pushed beyond your limit. Each session is different and revolves around lots of chatting and absolutely no burpees or tyre flipping!

Please don’t be put off by the Bootcamp in the name. The classes are absolutely nothing like a traditional Bootcamp. We use bodyweight, resistance bands (and dumbells in the Buggy-FREE Bootcamp) to learn how to breath to activate our core and pelvic floor and really move properly. There are lots of movements we do during class that carry over into our every day lives of being a mum. We need to learn to push, pull, bend, twist, squat, lunge and balance and learn how to do it safely while making our core work at the right time.

Buggy-FREE Bootcamp is simply BuggyBootcamp without the buggy! These classes are slightly harder and are not suitable for beginners but we still have low and high impact versions of all the exercises.

What to expect at class – At the start of the class we typically put picnic mats  on the grass and park the buggies around them and exercise surrounding the children using bodyweight exercises and resistance bands. We often play games to keep things interesting. This is walking flag tag and is great fun!

It is a circuit based class so you don’t need a specialist running buggy. You do need a resistance band to use during class. We do a dynamic warm up and then activate TVA and Glutes and wake up pelvic floor. Then either play a game or get straight to the main section. This will consist of strength exercises and. You can use your buggy throughout the class if little one likes to be constantly on the move, or baby can be in your arms, in a carrier or out on the mat. Toddlers and older can of course run around and they often join in copying the exercises which is lovely. It’s great to be out in the fresh air even when it’s cold and the children really love it. It’s really wonderful to see the children who have been at BuggyBootcamp for a while grow and develop and seeing you exercising does them a world of good and makes it a normal part of life. The classes are usually about one hour long but if it’s wet or extremely cold I do shorten them to 45 minutes so that you can get your little ones home.

The specialised online programmes provide a 6 week structured exercise plan including warm ups, posture and breathing realignment exercises. The body strength and core strength workouts are progressed weekly. The postnatal core strength programme is an ideal start to your postnatal healing journey

BuggyBootcamp@HOME on demand classes – These are recorded workouts with me teaching you as I would do within class so watch out for silly comments and the inability to count! There are beginner, Intermediate and advanced levels to choose from and the video library will simply grow and grow giving you lots of workouts to choose from to do at a time that suits you.

I know it’s scary starting an exercise class if you don’t know anyone, especially after the months of being pregnant and then not feeling quite like yourself because of the total upheaval of life as you knew it with a newborn. So for those of you that need that little extra nudge or are worried about not being able to keep up this is for you – Firstly and most importantly it’s NOT all about the exercise. Buggy Bootcamp Bedford is a fantastically friendly and welcoming group of mums of children of all ages who meet at Buggy Bootcamp to exercise and chat. It’s like a mother and baby group with lots of laughter and post natal specific exercise thrown in for good measure. We often stop for coffee and more chat after class and try to arrange meals and nights out regularly. The best thing about Buggy Bootcamp is that you immediately feel better when you see everyone. I know this from experience as although I’m the Instructor you guys have helped my postnatal depression so much. You arrive feeling dreadful after being kept up all night with baby and then a smile and brief chat later and you find that half the other mums have been up all night too. Being a mum can be isolating and you often feel that you’re the only one that is going through a particular issue but these wonderful ladies soon put it all into perspective.

After you have completed the registration form and there are no issues highlighted you can start at any time, when your baby is just six weeks or your toddler is 3 years or older. Several of my mums are on their second, third or fourth pregnancies at Buggy Bootcamp and as long as you’ve been exercising regularly it’s fine to come along during this special time. It doesn’t matter if you have to stop to tend to baby, or if your little one is having an unsettled day and won’t stop crying no matter what you do. It can be frustrating having to stop and start when you’ve come along to exercise but sometimes you just have to go with it. All of us realise that noise and crying happens and toddler tantrums are much better shared. We’re all in the same position or at least have been not long ago. Don’t worry that you won’t be able to keep up as you can work as little or much as you like so if you’ve had a sleepless night but still want to get out then you just take it easy. If I know you want to work hard though I will push you but for most of us mums it’s just about the getting together.

WHAT OUR WONDERFUL BUGGY BOOTCAMP MUMS HAVE TO SAY…



This is so much more than an exercise class (although it’s brilliant from that perspective too!). Jo makes everyone feel welcome, from people who’ve done very little exercise before, like me, to mum’s who played sport and were super fit pre baby. She also really cares about everyone, giving support on diet, motivation and of course recovering your body post pregnancy. I get a huge amount from the classes, I’ve lost weight, gained strength, got to share my latest parenting woes and most of all had fun. Running and leaping around with a bunch of babies and toddlers there means this class never gets dull or feels stuffy. You also don’t need to have had kids recently or have them with you, it’s a brilliant workout and it’s outdoors, what more could you want? I would highly recommend giving it a go!

Boot camp is absolutely fantastic, as a twin mum with a toddler as well boot camp was my life saviour! It enabled me to get out the house and do something for myself while including the children. Jo was amazing and able to support me back into getting fit, healthy and loose weight! Buggy Bootcamp has been great for me and my daughters. Not only does it help with general fitness it is great fun. You meet lovely people who make you laugh even when you have been up all night . It’s also great for the little ones to get them out and about it fresh air.

Jo is fantastic and tailors the exercises to fit your fitness (and well-being) level. I am now 20 weeks pregnant with my second child and I found the classes really good for keeping my fitness up without over doing it. Jo is very knowledgeable and will give me mini-exercises to do at home as well as ensure that I am getting the right exercise at boot-camp.
